She is the Dean for Dental Research and Graduate Education and a full-time professor (periodontal department) at Guarulhos University (Brazil). Her main research field is the diagnostic and treatment of different periodontal infections, with great emphasis on designing, conducting and reporting of Randomized Clinical Trials. She has received some important awards, including the Clinical Research Award given by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for the “most outstanding scientific article with direct clinical relevance in periodontics”, in the year of 2002; She has lectured extensively in United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia, and has authored around 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is the President Elect of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP) and of the IADR Periodontal Research Group, Associate Editor of the International Dental Journal, and a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Dental Research, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Periodontal Research.

Penn Dental Medicine – Microbiology

Dr. Hajishengallis earned a D.D.S. (1989) from the University of Athens, Greece, and a Ph.D. (1994) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Following postdoctoral studies in Microbiology and Immunology at UAB and the University at Buffalo, he held faculty appointments at Louisiana State University and the University of Louisville. He is currently the Thomas W. Evans Centennial Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Department of Microbiology. His field of interest lies at the host-microbe interface and his work has illuminated novel mechanisms of microbial dysbiosis and inflammation. More recently, his laboratory has identified key molecules involved in the homeostasis of the periodontium and other host tissues. He combines basic scientific and translational research, leading to innovative approaches to clinical problems, such as exemplified by periodontal disease. His research program is supported by the NIH/NIDCR and he has published over 150 papers, including publications in journals of general scientific interest, such as Nature Immunology, Science Translational Medicine, Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Communications, PNAS, Science Signaling, Nature Reviews Immunology, and Nature Reviews Microbiology. His research has been featured in Nature Reviews, Faculty of 1000-Biology, the NIH/NIDCR website, Scientific American, AAAS Science Update, WHYY-FM (NPR, Philadelphia) and the popular press. He was awarded the Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Biology from the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) in 2012. In 2016, he received a MERIT award from the NIH.

Prof. Kantarci is an Associate Member of the Staff at the Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, MA, USA, works as a Faculty Member at Harvard University’s School of Dental Medicine, and serves as an Associate Professor at Boston University’s Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Prof. Kantarci has started his career as dentist after graduating from Istanbul University in 1991. He completed his clinical and PhD studies at Istanbul University at the Department of Periodontology joining the faculty. He moved to the USA in 1999 as a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University.

Upon completing his postdoctoral studies in 2002, he has started clinical periodontology training at Boston University. After graduating, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 2004 at the Henry Goldman School of Medicine. He was promoted to the Associate Professorship in 2009.

In 2010, Prof. Kantarci joined the Forsyth Institute/Harvard University maintaining his faculty position at Boston University. During his academic career, Prof. Kantarci has been actively involved in training, education and patient care. He has mentored more than 30 PhD, doctorate, and Master’s theses; directed and taught in several graduate and postgraduate clinical and didactic dentistry courses.

He serves in the editorial board and as a reviewer of 15 dental and medical scientific journals. His research interests include Molecular Mechanisms and Resolution Pathways of Oral Inflammation in Periodontitis, Experimental Models; Signal Transduction in Neutrophils and Monocytes in Inflammatory Diseases, Clinical Applications of High-Throughput Analysis in Dental Research (e.g. xMAP Multiplexing), and Biology of Surgery-Assisted Tooth Movement.

Prof. Kantarci is the recipient of 15 federal, international and industry-supported research grants and holds several patents. He has published more than 85 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, wrote book chapters, and has presented more than 170 oral talks and posters in dental and medical congresses.

Christos Katsaros is Professor and Chair at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, University of Bern, Switzerland since 2008.

He obtained his dental degree from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and received his 4-year orthodontic training under Professor Rolf Berg at the University of Saarland, Germany, where he also completed his doctoral thesis (“Dr. med. dent.”) and his “Habilitation”. Professor Katsaros worked also as a researcher at the Göteborg University, Sweden, where he completed a Ph.D. (“Odont. Dr. /Ph.D.”). From 2000 to 2002 he served as an Associate Professor and from 2002 to 2008 as a Professor of Orthodontics at the Department of Orthodontics and Oral Biology, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Professor Katsaros is author or co-author of over 170 peer reviewed publications and has given many lectures internationally. His current research interests include the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that control face development and wound healing in CLP as well as the prevention and therapy of gingival recession in orthodontic patients. He serves as Associate Editor for the AJO-DO, as Section Editor Dentistry for the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal and he is editorial board member or reviewer for several international scientific journals. He is the President of the European Orthodontic Society (EOS) and an Active Member of the Angle Society of Europe.

Dr. Phoebus Madianos is Professor of Periodontology, in the School of Dentistry, at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He received his DDS degree from the same University and his clinical certificate in graduate Periodontics, as well as his PhD degree in Oral Microbiology from Gothenburg University. After working as Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, he returned to Athens and joined the department of Periodontology at the University of Athens in 2003. He is currently the Director of the Graduate Program in Periodontology and of the Osseointegrated Implant Unit of the Dental School at the University of Athens.
He has been President of the European Federation of Periodontology and a Board member of the Continental European Division of the International Association for Dental Research. He is currently the chair of the Scientific Affairs Committee of EFP
He has published over 60 scientific papers in international journals, which have received over 3000 citations, in the fields of periodontal pathogenesis, periodontal medicine and Implantology.

Dr. Offenbacher received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Boston University, and his DDS and PhD in Biochemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed a post doctorate fellowship in pharmacology, at Forsyth Institute, as well as a certificate in periodontology and oral medicine from Harvard.

Dr. Offenbacher was named the 2015 winner of the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Dental Research by the American Dental Association. He also received the Norton Ross Award for Clinical Research, the Gies Award and the Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Award from the International Association for Dental Research. He is past president of the American Association of Dental Research.

Dr. Offenbacher has conducted epidemiological and clinical research investigating the role of periodontal infections in systemic diseases. Currently, his research laboratory is actively exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms of periodontal disease pathogensis from an “omics” perspective.

Prof. Giovanni E. Salvi received his license in dental medicine in 1988 from the medical faculty of the University of Bern, Switzerland.
In 1990, Prof. Salvi received his „Dr. med. dent“ degree. Between 1992 and 1994 he was a graduate student in the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
From 1994 to 1997. Prof. Salvi was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC, USA.
In 1998 Prof. Salvi became a board certified periodontist and since 1999 he is a fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI).
In 2005, Prof. Salvi was appointed teacher of the year in the School of Dental Medicine, Bern, Switzerland.

Anton Sculean is professor and chairman of the Department of Periodontology and currently the Executive Director of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Berne, Switzerland. He qualified in 1990 at the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary and has received his postgraduate training at the Universities Münster, Germany and Royal Dental College Aarhus, Denmark. He received his Habilitation (Ph.D.) at the University of Saarland, Homburg, Germany. From 2004 to 2008 he was appointed as Head of the Department of Periodontology and Program Director of the EFP accredited postgraduate program at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In December 2008, he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology of the University of Bern, Switzerland. Currently, he serves as Executive Chairman of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern. Professor Sculean has been a recipient of many research awards, among others the Anthony Rizzo Award of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), and the IADR/Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine and received honorary doctorates (Dr. h.c.) from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary and from the Victor Babes University in Timisoara, Romania. He has authored more than 280 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 16 chapters in periodontal textbooks and has delivered more than 350 lectures at national and international meetings. He is the editor of the book Periodontal Regenerative Therapy published by Quintessence and guest editor of the Periodontology 2000 Issue published in 2015 entitled “Wound Healing in Periodontology and Implantology”.

He serves on the editorial board of more than 12 dental journals, among others Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Periodontal Research and Clinical Advances in Periodontics and is Associate Editor of Quintessence International, Clinical Oral Investigations, Section Editor of BMC Oral Health and Editor in Chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry.

Professor Sculean served from 2009-2010 as president of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR, is past president of the Swiss Society of Periodontology and President Elect (for the period 2018-2019) of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). His research interests focus on periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-esthetic periodontal therapy, use of antibiotics, antiseptics and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.




Prof. Dr. Lior SHAPIRA

Prof. Lior Shapira is the Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Vice Dean in the Hebrew University- Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem. He is a Professor of Periodontology, and the Betty and D. Walter Cohen Chair in Clinical Periodontal Research. Prof. Shapira research is focused on the Host response during periodontal and peri-implant infections. He published over 100 scientific papers, as well as many reviews. Several international awards acknowledged the impact of his research work, including the Rizzo Award - IADR periodontal research group 1999, Finalist in the “Jaccard-EFP Research Price Competition” 2000, the Sunstar Award (Best article on perio-systemic connection) 2003 and the Distinguish Scientist Award in Periodontal Research – IADR 2009. Prof. Shapira is a Past-President of the Israeli Society and the Deputy-Chair of the Scientific Affairs Committee of the EFP.

Andreas Stavropoulos (AS) after having studied dentistry in Heidelberg, Germany, and Thessaloniki and Athens, Greece, he worked a few years in private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry. AS joined then the dept. of Periodontology, Aarhus University, Denmark, for postgraduate training, where he also received his Ph.D. in 2002 and his dr.odont. degree in 2011, based on preclinical and clinical studies on regenerative periodontal therapy and in association with dental implants. In 2013, AS joined Malmö University as the Professor and Chair in the dept. of Periodontology.

AS has received several awards for his research, including the 1st Basic Research Prize of the European Association of Osseointegration (2011) and the Straumann Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine, conferred by the IADR (2013). He has authored several publications in international peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and he is member of several dental journals Editorial Boards. AS is currently Member of the Education Committee of the EAO and the Chancellor of the Periodontal Research Group of IADR.




Prof. Dr. Stefan-Ioan STRATUL

He received a PhD title from the same University, the second PhD title from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany (thesis director – Professor Anton Sculean), the third PhD title from the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania, and a Master degree in Endodontics of the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Bucharest. Specialist of Periodontology since 2012. He has defended his habilitation thesis in 2015. Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology of the Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara since 2016. Stefan-Ioan Stratul has extensively published and lectured in the field of non-surgical and regenerative periodontology. His current main scientific interests are magnification-aided mucogingival and periodontal plastic surgery, and periimplant diseases. Besides his scientific and academic activities, since 1991 he runs a successful large private clinic in Timisoara (Romania), focused on periodontology and performant endodontics.




Dr. Ricardo TELES

OraPharma Distinguished Professor

Dr. Ricardo Teles, OraPharma Distinguished Professor, joined the department of Periodontology at UNC in 08/15/2014. Shortly after joining UNC he was appointed Vice-Chair of the Department of Periodontology. He received his DDS in 1988 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After obtaining his Certificate in Periodontology and a Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) in 1996, he returned to Brazil to take a position as chair of the Periodontology department at the Estácio de Sá University School of Dentistry in Rio de Janeiro. During his tenure at that institution, he also served as Dean of the dental school from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, he returned to Boston to take a position as Assistant Member of the staff in the Department of Periodontology at the Forsyth Institute and as Clinical Instructor in Periodontology at HSDM. He was promoted to Associate Member of the staff in 2008 and to the tenured position of Senior Member of the Staff in 2011.

The focus of his research is to examine in vivo the interplay between subgingival polymicrobial biofilms and mediators of the immuno-inflammatory host response. In 2010, he was awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study biomarkers of periodontal disease progression. This ongoing project involved 4 clinical centers in the United States with the goal of monitoring 500 subjects for 12 months without intervention. Subjects were monitored for changes in clinical, immunological and microbiological parameters on a bimonthly basis using state of the art technology. Dr. Teles is an ad-hoc reviewer to many scientific journals and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Molecular Oral Microbiology and the Journal of Oral Microbiology. He has authored/co-authored over 80 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.
